Loyd Owens Canoe Trail
Come paddle along the Loyd Owens Canoe Trail and take in the unspoiled beauty of
the Tallapoosa River in Cleburne County. Enjoy canoeing, kayaking, and camping along
forty-one miles of the Tallapoosa, which have been designated by the U.S. Department
of the Interior as one of the cleanest rivers in the Eastern United States.
The river abounds with fish, ducks, and other wildlife year round. Home to excellent
bass, catfish, and bream fishing, the Tallapoosa holds a special treat for the fisherman
with trophy red-eye bass. Along the way, expect to see sandbars, steep rocky banks,
farms, and bridges constructed by the Civilian Conservation Coprs in the 1930's.
Mountain laurel, native azaleas and many other plants are found along the trail.
Each season offers a unique showing of plant colors and textures. Enjoy plenty of
moving water to keep things interesting and fun for paddlers of all ages.
